FOREIGN SERVICE PROGRAMS
Our Foreign Service training has been developed to assist individuals seeking a diplomatic career with the federal government. How the entry competition works, our services to assist you, and our client success rate are described below.
Our services pertain to all aspects of the Canadian Foreign Service entry process, and to the interview only for U.S. State Department entry.
The Foreign Service Competition
Step 1—The Examination (Canada)
Several thousand applicants usually enter the Post-Secondary Recruitment competition to be hired by the Foreign Affairs/Trade Department, the Immigration Department or CIDA as either political/economic officers, trade commissioners, immigration officers, management/consular officers, or development program managers.
The written examination for FS positions now includes:
Situational Judgment Test (SJT)—a multiple-choice competency test using workplace scenarios to determine job suitability
Graduate Recruitment Test (GRT)—a multiple-choice cognitive test
Written Communication Proficiency Test (WCPT)—a multiple-choice language usage exercise
Step 2—The Interview (Canada & U.S.)
Only top candidates from test-day are invited for an interview. The "oral assessment" probes your ability to think on your feet, and evaluates personal suitability for specific careers.
In the personal interview you are questioned about:
On-the-job problems and how you would solve them
Your reasons for wanting to join the government and suitability for the position
A group simulation exercise follows later in the day. It involves several candidates in a lengthy session that assesses analytical and communications skills, ability to work under pressure, teamwork, and common sense.
The interview board evaluates overall potential based on various intellectual, verbal and interpersonal skills demonstrated, and on judgment shown in responding to the job-related questions and group work.
FSECC Services
The key to your success throughout the competition is knowing what to expect on the tests, and how to approach the interview exercises effectively.
The FSECC Study Kit provides comprehensive information to help you focus your preparation, save time, and perform efficiently and effectively on the tests. The kit is available for self-study.
The FSECC Exam Tutoring is a new personal service we offer by telephone in lieu of the group seminars previously held in large Canadian cities. All your questions about the entry process, exams and evaluation, and about different positions and work in the Foreign Service, will be answered individually, a benefit unavailable elsewhere for this arcane entry competition.
For candidates who succeed in the exams, one-on-one FSECC Interview Counselling is accessible across Canada, the United States and abroad for Canadian and American Foreign Service interviews. Our proven advice builds skills and confidence by providing strategies to prepare and present yourself favourably. Sample analytical questions, role-playing scenarios and personal questions used in the interview are discussed. Guidance is also provided on the objective, dynamics, substance, and evaluation of the group simulation exercise.
