Study Kits (Canada): PSEE, SJT, WCPT, GRT

Our current, comprehensive, reputable study materials—available in English only—are designed to help you build skills and prepare quickly for Foreign Service and related federal government job competitions.

Note: Foreign Service (FS) positions are with either the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) in the Political/Economic and Commercial/Economic officer streams, or with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for the Immigration officer stream; Management/Consular (MCO), Commerce (CO), Policy (ES) officer jobs and Administrative Assistant (FSAA) positions are with DFATD also; Program Manager (PM) positions were with the former Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), now part of DFATD.

For over 20 years our study materials have enabled thousands of clients to obtain high test scores, learn about tricky evaluation methods, develop application material that satisfies complex screening requirements, and succeed in getting to the interview stage of their competition.

We take the tests ourselves every year and debrief with clients regularly so we can update our materials when changes occur. We hired people to work with us in test development who did so for the federal government, and our Director’s background as a Foreign Service Officer and his expertise in behaviourally-based training makes our company the only proven source to help individuals in government competitions.

The Study Kit (which does not include the separate PSEE) contains:

Situational Judgment Test (SJT)
To help you understand and perform well on the SJT—which has been used since 2003, and which replaced the old types of Foreign Service exams—the Study Kit provides precise test-taking tips and practice materials. How the SJT was developed, the corporate culture and values system underlying the “ideal world” of the test, tools to help frame and answer questions successfully, and definitions for the three “competencies” evaluated in it are explained in detail. Two full-length, 100-question sample tests replicating the real SJT are provided for thorough practice and include answers at the back.

Graduate Recruitment Test (GRT)
To help you improve your ability on this cognitive exercise in use in this form since 1989, the Study Kit initially provides over 120 sample questions, equivalent to more than two full GRT tests and organized in sequential sections to facilitate skills development. Then, a full-length, 55-question sample GRT is included so you can practice using what you learned to prep effectively for the real test. Details on the composition of the GRT, techniques to manage your time and boost your score on all four types of questions—similarities, number series, arithmetic and figure analogies— are included in the Kit with a full explanation for each answer.

Written Communication Proficiency Test (WCPT)
To get you accustomed to handling this intensive language usage exercise in place since 2000, three full-length, 50-question sample tests replicating the WCPT are provided for repeated practice. An answer key is included for each sample question. It identifies the grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, tone, title, logical ordering or summary issue being tested, and directs you to a single source where you can quickly learn to correct problems affecting your performance. Useful tips to handle questions quicker and more effectively are included in our test-taking instructions.

Extra Help Included in the Study Kit

How to Write a “Statement of Interest” for Government Jobs
You may be required to write mini-essays, or “statements of interest”, on why you want each government job to which you apply. Proven tips to do so are provided in the Study Kit—a feature exclusive to our service. You will learn how to do an effective self-analysis vís à vís the job(s) you want, how to select appropriate examples from your experience to boost your candidacy, and how to write a personal statement that will stand scrutiny. How and when the statement of interest can be used in the evaluation process is also explained.

  • Take advantage of the only proven source to prepare for in-class, officer-level federal government tests
